Rio Tinto has introduced this Portal to allow businesses to view expressions of interest (EOIs) for goods and / or services required by Rio Tinto from time to time, and to allow eligible businesses (ie. those that have completed the registration process) to submit responses to those EOIs.

Rio Tinto will decide, in its absolute discretion, which businesses that have responded to an EOI will be invited to respond to a Request Document issued by Rio Tinto for the supply of goods/services that it requires (which may be through a request for information (RFI), a request for proposal (RFP), a request for tender (RFT) a request for quote (RFQ) or any other form of request document issued by Rio Tinto).

Uploading or posting a response to an EOI does not guarantee that Rio Tinto will invite you to respond to a Request Document or that Rio Tinto will ultimately issue you with a Purchase Order or enter into a Contract with you. Rio Tinto reserves its absolute discretion in respect of these matters and will have no liability to you as a result of any decision to award or not award a contract to you.

EOI-00023 AMANZAMNYAMA – NSELENI ROAD UPGRADE 25/07/2025 01/08/2025 22:00 Richards Bay Aug 2025

The upgrading of the road – river crossing will be achieved by constructing a coffer dam upstream of the existing embankment and creating temporary diversion for the river flow. The middle section of the embankment will be excavated out and new concrete retaining wall structures, invert slab and portal culverts will be constructed in place. The approach roads to the new culvert structure will be consolidated and bulk earthworks will be laid to raise the road levels to the new level of the culvert crossing.

The upgraded road approaches will have a cross section consisting of 2 x 3.7m wide basic lanes, 0.5m wide surfaced shoulders and a 3% camber.

The proposed upgrades and construction activities will be carried out on a road with live traffic and therefore safe and careful construction methods must be employed to ensure the safety of workers as well as road users.

The existing infill embankment and drainage pipes at the Amanzamnyama road – river crossing impedes natural water flow, causes upstream damming and downstream drying which is in contravention with several national legislations such as the National Water Act (Act 36 of 1998). The main objective of the project is to rehabilitate the road - river crossing to a standard that supports the biodiversity and ecological balance of upstream and downstream vegetation, species and habitats which relies on waterlogged conditions for their ecological integrity. The project also seeks to comply with international best practice requirements for environmental management which are essential for SAPPI’s international market credibility.

The works are the rehabilitation of the road – river crossing on Amanzamnyama – Nseleni road within SAPPI Plantation.

The proposed scope of works for the project entails upgrading of the existing road – river crossing to a reinforced concrete culvert structure designed to allow continuous river flow under low flow conditions and to accommodate the 1 in 20-year peak flood during storm conditions. Currently the road river crossing is an earth embankment built across the Amanzamnyama river and is provided with minor relief pipes towards the top of the embankment for overtopping.

The upgraded culvert is intended to restore the biodiversity and ecosystem which used to exist and thrive on the downstream of the road – river crossing prior to construction of the earth embankment. The new culvert will be positioned to ensure that the dam environment and associated flora and fauna that now existing on the upstream will be maintained.
